The Wear & Carry Permit application process (including background checks and all required documents) can take up to 90 days from the date your complete application is accepted by MSP.

For a Wear & Carry Permit, Maryland mandates completion of a state-approved 16-hour firearms safety training course taught by a Qualified Handgun Instructor. That training must include live-fire proficiency, with at least 25 shots fired from no more than 15 yards, achieving a minimum of 70% accuracy. The qualification score must be documented and submitted with your application.

According to Maryland law (Md. Public Safety § 5-306), applicants are ineligible for a permit if they have:

  • A conviction for a felony, or a misdemeanor carrying imprisonment of over one year, or any offense where they could have been sentenced to more than two years

  • A conviction for a controlled dangerous substance (CDS)—meaning drug possession, use, or distribution
  • History indicating alcoholism, addiction, or habitual drug abuse (unless legally under medical direction)

  • Exhibited a propensity for violence or instability that could make firearm possession dangerous

  • Currently on supervised probation for a crime punishable by one year or more, DUI, or violating a protective order
  • Any final protective or extreme risk order currently in place

  • Convictions under § 4-104 (misconduct involving minors) on or after October 1 2023, which can bar a permit for five years depending on severity

Yes — Maryland residents with a Wear & Carry Permit (CCW-style) must renew their permit, and here's a breakdown of how renewal works:

  • Initial Permit Term: Valid for 2 years, expiring on the last day of your birth month, two years after issuance

  • Renewal Term: Once renewed, each permit lasts for 3 years

You may submit your renewal application no more than 120 days (about 4 months) before your current permit expires — the portal blocks earlier submissions

Maryland State Police recommends starting the process about 90 days prior to expiration to avoid delays

Reminder emails are typically sent via the Licensing Portal, but it's your responsibility to update contact info to receive them

Businesses require an initial deposit for a few key reasons — all tied to commitment, cash flow, and risk management:

1. Securing Commitment

  • A deposit shows that the customer is serious about moving forward.

  • It discourages last-minute cancellations or “ghosting” after the business has invested time and resources.

2. Covering Upfront Costs

  • Many jobs require the business to spend money before the work is done — for materials, travel, permits, or prep work.

  • A deposit helps fund these upfront expenses so the business isn’t operating at a loss in the early stages.

3. Managing Cash Flow

  • Deposits provide immediate working capital to keep the business running while a project is in progress.

  • Especially for small businesses, this ensures they can pay for staff, materials, or rentals without dipping into savings.
